Cécile’s Cuisine – cooking lessons - Saturday, January 30, 2010 – 2 to 5 pm

This is Cécile’s second year giving PAN members cooking lessons, both French and Moroccan cuisine, showing how to make one main dish and one other dish per session. This time Cécile will show us how she makes chouchouka, a Moroccan first course, followed by traditional French blanquette de veau. The lesson will take place in French and cost 15€, but bring along a plastic container and don’t go home empty-handed. Limited to 8 participants.

Tarot Reading - Tuesday, January 26th, 2010 - 6:30 to 8 :30 pm

PAN member Charlotte O’Hare, who has over 20 years of experience reading the Tarot cards, would like to offer an early evening of instruction and discussion about reading cards, as well as a short reading for each attendee. Bring a deck of Tarot cards with you if you have them. Those with experience reading cards are also welcome to attend and offer their experiences and card readings if they wish.

“La Cave de Joséphine” - Saturday, January 23, 2010 - 2:30 pm

La Malmaison, Rueil Malmaison - RER A
La Malmaison, now a national museum, was the majestic residence of Josephine and Napoleon, as well as the headquarters of the French government from 1800 to 1802 and has over 200 art objects as permanent exhibits: crystal from Baccarat and St. Louis, Sevres porcelain and sumptuous silver services. Our guided visit will concern the temporary exhibition which uses the extraordinarily detailed inventory of the Josephine’s wine cellar to chronicle the evolution of tastes and table arts over the Napoleon years, known for their quality and innovation.
PAN member Patricia Rosen will be giving this visit in French, with some English translation. €16 per person (guided visit and entrance fee).

Approaches to Climate Change - Wednesday, January 20, 2010 – 6:30 to 8:30 pm

Before and after Copenhagen… Now that we’re going towards the cool calm of the New Year, come and hear an economist talk about the things that didn't make it onto CNN, and get a feel for the historical perspective. We can share various perspectives about this fascinating topic, including the "climategate" controversy concerning overly-frank emails about scientific facts supporting the climate change hypothesis. Free event for PAN members, €5 for guests.

Hills and Dales along the Oise - Sunday January 17, 2010

We'll follow the meanders of the Oise River for about 19 kms between Pontoise and Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, up hills for some beautiful views, then back down to the riverbanks.

Our train leaves St. Lazare at 9:27 am. Its name is YOLA, direction Gare de Boissy l'Aillerie, and we'll meet up in front of the third train car from the rear. We get off at the Gare de Pontoise at 10:07. There are trains back to Paris, Gare St Lazare, from Conflans-Sainte-Honorine every 15 minutes and it takes 30 minutes. We should be back by about 5 pm.

James Farm, Joshua Redman Quartet - Saturday, January 16, 2010 - 8 pm

Salle Pleyel, Paris VIII A California native, Joshua Redman is a summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Harvard (1991) who abandoned the idea of continuing on to Yale Law, to pursue a life in music. His music has encompassed both hard bop and nonchalance funky, rendering homage to John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and Bud Powell, but expressing its essence in his own harmony and semantics. Himself on saxophone he is accompanied by Aaron Parks on piano, Matt Penman on base and Eric Harland on drums.

The Emerson String Quartet plays Schubert, Dvorak, and Shostakovich - Tuesday, January 12, 2010 - 8:30 pm

Cité de la Musique - Salle des concerts
The Emerson String Quartet, composed of Eugene Drucker and Philip Setzer on violin, Lawrence Dutton on viola, and David Finckel on cello, will be playing Franz Schubert’s #11, Antonin Dvorak’s #14, and Dimitri Shostavovich’s #9 string quartets.
PAN has pre-purchased a limited number of tickets (category 1) at €24 each.

ALTAN - Friday, January 8, 2010 – 8:30 pm

Traditional Irish music - Theatre de la Ville, Paris IV
Since 1983 the band Altan has been the reference for traditional Irish music world wide, singing jigs, airs, reels and songs in English and Celtic from their northern Donegal origins. Their newest release, Local Ground, is their tenth album.

The AUC's mission is to support relations among American alumni associations. We help the presidents and officers of the associations network with one another so they can coordinate events and activities.
It was created 4 years ago to formalize an informal relationship that managed the Cocktail at the American Ambassador's Residence - held annually since 1994.
For a club to be a member of the AUC, it has to be a recognized by its University and be a 1901 association. Clubs that are not 1901 associations can be affiliate members.
