This year the charity day at Roland Garros, the Saturday before the actual tournament begins, is being called “Les Enfants de Roland Garros”. It’s a welcome combination of charity and sport and a wonderful opportunity to witness some great exhibition matches, see some of the champions on the practice courts, and wander around the promotional stands and grounds. The doors open at 10 am. 19€ per person.

Much influenced by Shakespeare and well-known for his love affair with novelist George Sand, Alfred de Musset wrote the first modern dramas in the French language. Fantasio, written in 1834, is a light and ambiguous play in which the cynical but clown-like hero searches for his one big, grand idea. Discover the excitement of thoroughbred racing in France with an insider's tour guided by Gina Rarick (www.gallopfrance.com), currently the only American professional racehorse trainer in France and the first American woman granted a license here. Starting with a BYO picnic lunch in the infield of this historic racecourse, Gina will explain how racing works in France. After lunch there will be a tour of the track, the weighing room where the jockeys prepare for the races, the stabling/saddling enclosures and, if possible, a trip down to the starting gates to watch the horses jump out for a race. Dress for changeable weather! 10 euros for PAN members, 12 euros for non-members. Please reserve your place early. This was a very popular event last year and we need to give Longchamp advance notice for picnic tables.

Wine Tasting - Friday, May 14, 2010 – 6:30 to 8:30 pm

We’ll look at the special techniques (nosing, slurping and gurgling!) for tasting wine: how to capture different and subtle flavors and the same time feel multiple sensations in the mouth. And then we’ll try to describe them. The aim of this tasting is to enable us to experience what is, for example, softness and sharpness, to describe the sensations using professional terms and, finally to judge a wine objectively. We’ll be tasting 6 wines, all classics. Our wine specialist comes from Le Musée du Vin in Paris. In English. 26 euros per person.

Since 1880 this shop has been a sanctuary of aromatic and medicinal plants, run by a pharmacist, Mr. Raveneau, who manufactures his medicine from plants only. He will show us his lab where he dries and combines macerated plants from all over the world to make essences and extracts. One hour visit in English and French.

PAN Hike - The Bois de Boulogne, lakes, woodland paths, rose gardens...Sunday, May 2, 2010

Meet us at the Porte Maillot metro station, sortie Avenue de la Grande Armée, coté impairs, at 10 am on Sunday May 2nd to explore the Bois de Boulogne, its gardens, woods, lakes, race tracks, polo grounds. We'll picnic on our way so bring along your lunch.

This hike is about 10 kms long and we should be finished by 2 pm, including lunch. Depending on the weather and how we feel, some of us can continue our hike across the river through the park up to the Fort du Mont Valérien.
